Stop sleeping on Bretman Rock’s NYFW outfits
Look, Bretman Rock’s instagram boasts over 17 million followers, so it’s not like he’s being slept on per se. I just think the fashion world could be a little more awake to the 23-year-old influencer’s style, especially after his showing at New York Fashion Week so far.
Celebrity stylist Brian Meller styled a lot of Bretman’s looks. Scrolling through his Instagram, you can see that Meller’s trademark style is bold and unapologetic. He plays with androgyny and worships colour in a way that doesn’t hide his client, but highlights their personality, of which Bretman has a lot. The result is a partnership that has made my little fashionista heart soar. Looking at Bretman’s photos was like taking off your mask after hours with it on- it was so refreshing to see a man wear anything other than a tux or jeans and a shirt.
Day 0, Bretman stepped out in his full power in this archival Prada SS01 and Raf Simons AW18 ensemble. Here we see one of two overarching elements of Bretman’s looks this NYFW: abs. If you follow Bretman at all or watch his Instagram stories, you know he works hard for his body- and here it is in full showcase. The look is full street, one that has New York written all over it. It’s a fitting welcome to the start of fashion week.
For the Peter Do show, Bretman had on this velvet power suit moment, which ended up being so apt for the show, since a lot of Peter Do’s garments this season showed back to office inspiration. Here, we see the second element of Bretman’s NYFW looks: structured, powerful suits. It’s almost a play to the unfortunate fact that a lot of male celebrities (or non-celebrities) who attend events like red carpets or fashion shows do so wearing basic navy or black tuxes, or oversized shirts and jeans, which is their paltry take on “street style”. Here, Bretman’s almost saying: “You want me to wear a suit? Fine. I choose this one.”
Choosing favourites in Bretman’s NYFW repertoire is a near-impossible task, but it’s very difficult not to fall in love with these two looks. Classic with a twist, like Cosmpolitan made with blue curacao liqueur instead of the go-to cranberry. The black ensemble is a Prabal Gurung set, with a very deep V neckline on the blazer and a pop of pink peeking through the lapel, made even more interesting by the asymmetry of the colours. The matching pants is in an exaggerated bell-bottom silhouette. Delicious.
The purple one is what a fashionable villain would wear, brought to you by that vivid colour and the sharp, pointy hems. Of course, there’s the collar too. The whole combo brings to mind Maleficent, or the Evil Queen in Snow White. In Brian’s post for this outfit the caption was “there were tears”. I bet there was.
Bretman combined these two elements- the abs and the suit- in this Monse Maison outfit. Almost look like somebody took a pair of scissors to a typical suit.
Bretman had more looks and NYFW isn’t even over yet. If I were you, I’d turn on post notifications for Bretman Rock’s instagram. And Brian Meller’s too.
